The arthritic knee – non-surgical advances
Total knee replacement is one of the commonest surgical procedures carried out worldwide. It has overtaken the number of total hip replacements carried out yearly in The National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh. However, one of the key elements to successful outcome following total knee replacement is to have exhausted all conservative measures prior to scheduling knee arthroplasty. This talk outlines the current non-surgical methods that are used to prolong the lifespan of the patients’ native knee prior to having total knee replacement. This talk also describes some of the new technologies and biologics that are used.
Mr Keith Synnott, FRCSI (Tr&Orth) (letters to be confirmed)

What to do about back pain.
Back pain is a very common presentation and while it is usually non-specific and self -limiting it can cause a great deal of anxiety for patients and clinicians alike. Early reassurance and a consistent message should give patients the confidence to engage in appropriate rehabilitation. This relies on an awareness of when a presentation might reflect an underlying issue that might require more intensive investigation or treatment. This talk aims to give the perspective of a spine surgeon as to what clinical and radiological findings are likely to be significant so that a decision on appropriate next steps in management can be made.
