Raising awareness of rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives

Rare Disease Day is the official international awareness-raising campaign for those who suffer from rare diseases. The main objective of the campaign is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives.

Two of our patients talked to Brian O’Connell from the Claire Byrne Show (RTE1) about their rare disease and treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh.

Globally there are over 6000 rare diseases, 72% of them being genetic and 70% of them starting in Childhood. One of the messages that are key to those who suffer from a Rare Disease is that they need equitable access to diagnosis, treatment and care.

The National Orthopaedic Hospital at Cappagh in Dublin is one of the leading hospitals in Ireland that caters for those who suffer from rare orthopaedic and musculoskeletal diseases.

On Feb 28th, the public is encouraged to share a photo on Social Media to show solidarity with people living with a rare disease in your community and to share a photo with painted hands-on social media using #RareDiseaseDay and tag @rarediseaseday.
