Restaurant & Catering

Good food and nutrition are essential to health, wellbeing and recovery. Each day the Restaurant & Catering Service prepares high-quality food for inpatients, visitors to the hospital, and our staff members. They take great pride in their work, creating nutritionally-balanced menus that offer variety and appeal to broad tastes. And they use seasonal ingredients, rotating menus regularly so that long-stay patients and regular canteen customers enjoy new food options and flavours.

Meals and beverages are served at regular intervals to ensure patients are nourished and hydrated. And the team regularly collaborates with the Hospital dietitian to create menu options for patients with food allergies, intolerances and medical conditions with dietary restrictions.

During your stay, a member of the Restaurant & Catering Service may visit you to request feedback on the food choice, quality and service. We value your honest feedback and use your comments to enhance the food fare at the Hospital.

The Restaurant & Catering Service operates a systematic approach to food safety management in accordance with the Hazardous Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), and all Catering Service staff have completed HACCP Food Safety Level 2 Intermediate training.

Special Requests

If you have a special dietary requirement or particular food request, please let us know and we will endeavour to accommodate your ask.

Protected Mealtimes

Non-urgent activities are suspended 15-minutes before and after meal service to ensure patients have sufficient time to eat, digest and enjoy their food.

If you are away from your bed during food service, the nursing staff will provide you with a meal voucher on your return to the ward. These vouchers are redeemable in the restaurant. And if you have eaten and are still hungry, please let the nursing staff know and they will arrange a sandwich, yoghurt or snack for you.

Red Tray Policy

If you require assistance when eating or have difficulty swallowing, your meal will be served on a Red Tray. The Red Tray lets the nursing staff know that you require assistance. Additionally, if you have special dietary requirements or have difficulty swallowing, the nursing staff can make a special meal request for you.

If you require special food for dietary, religious or nutritional reasons, please tell the nursing staff and they will prepare a special meal for you. If you suffer from food allergies please highlight this on admission. Your chart will be noted and you will be given a colour-coded band to your wrist indicating that you have an allergy. Food menus highlight allergens to guide choices and the Restaurant & Catering Service are advised of patient allergies and dietary requirements so that they can prepare suitable meals and prevent allergen contamination. The Catering Department adheres to the highest standards of food preparation for patient safety.

The Catering Service adheres to sustainable food preparation practices. Menus are meticulously planned, foods are locally sourced, and portion sizes are well-considered to minimise waste and surplus and uneaten foods are composted.

We request that patients avail of meals provided by our Catering Service. These meals have been carefully designed to offer patients a healthy and balanced diet to assist recovery. Moreover, we ask visitors to refrain from bringing food items that require refrigeration/heating and take away meals into the Hospital, however, fruit baskets, chocolates and other food gifts are permitted.

Hot and cold beverages are available to purchase in the Vending Room, located beside the main restaurant, which is open 24 hours per day. In addition, snack foods and soft drinks can be purchased from Vending machines located in the Vending Room beside the main restaurant and the porch area, at the Hospital Reception.
