International Overdose Awareness Day is a crucial reminder that the danger of overdose looms not only in the context of illicit drugs but also in relation to prescribed and diverted medications. In an interview with Pat Kenny, Dr. Conor Hearty, Consultant Anaesthesiologist at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh, stressed the importance of education and the correct use and stewardship of these medications. Prescription drugs can provide much-needed relief to those in pain or suffering from chronic illnesses, however, it is important to remember that they can still become addictive and lead to overdose.
